Creative direction and project coordination for the relaunch of the UN Chronicle, the flagship magazine of the Department of Public Information of the United Nations with over 60 years of publishing history.
The project included creating a new identity, graphic standards, a print layout template for the magazine, as well as website planning, design and front-end web development.
United Nations Department of Public Information
August 2007
The UN Chronicle had gone through numerous visual iterations in a rather ad hoc and unsystematic manner. The new brand identity was built from a logotype in the typeface Veritas, a fresh interpretation of a classic humanist serif. The logotype is accompanied by an iconic olive branch, signifying peace since Ancient Greece and long associated with the United Nations, but in a more natural interpretation to offer a contrast with the abstract wreath icon of the principle United Nations logo. The iconic peacekeeper helmet blue is the principle colour of the UN Chronicle, complimented by a palette ranging into greys and beiges.
Various cover and spread implementations were designed during the development of the graphic standards.
A web version of the magazine was designed and developed using the latest online technologies of that time (2007), and represented the first time the magazine was database-driven, searchable and readily updatable through a content management system (Java-based).
