The United Nations Office of Disaster Risk Deduction (UNDRR) required a revitalization and refocus for one of their initiatives to enhance news media coverage of disaster risk management issues. DIRAJ is an association of African journalists based in Kenya sponsored by UNDRR.
I provided and implemented detailed plans to strategically grow the network through a variety of communication products, including a member onboarding process, original reporting story production process, expert webinars, social media partnerships and hashtag campaigns. The initiative was also completely rebranded and the DIRAJ website was rebuilt to include events and journalistic resources.
United Nations Office of Disaster Risk Deduction (UNDRR)
2020
Well-edited videos with high-quality original footage are a key reporting strength of the DIRAJ journalists. We harnessed this through a staged story process informed by a scoop and issue prioritization system augmented with interview access to United Nations, civil society and academic experts.
Motion graphic templates were part of a process to quickly and efficiently process videos into branded social media motion cards.
The results significantly increased audience reach.
Events, webinars, interviews and social media outreach activities were coordinated to coincide with UN international observances (UN Days) to earn amplification through the extra news media boost.
